Spent all day and all night researching....ZzZzZzZz
Ok i swear I'm a crazy person, but i might be able to decode some of the codes on the link...
At the very beginning of the long text, it say "begin 644" which when i searched came up with this: http://www5.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/qld/consol_act/cc189994/s644.html
CRIMINAL CODE 1899 - SECT 644
Admissions
644 Admissions
(1 An accused person may by himself, herself or the person’s counsel admit on the trial any fact alleged against the person, and such admission is sufficient proof of the fact without other evidence.)
(2 The Crown may by its counsel admit on the trial of an accused any fact relevant to the trial where the accused is in agreement with this being done, and such admission is sufficient proof of the fact without other evidence.)
(3 In this section—) "trial" also includes, and it is hereby declared to have always included, proceedings before justices dealing summarily with an indictable offence.
When i scrolled down to the long text, close to the top, i went down to the 25 row, and saw it say "(2-!W". Instantly searched it up piece by piece and apparently its backwards for W-2, which is actually a tax document with total wages and amounts withheld for "Federal state taxes, social security, Medicare, and dependent care benefits."
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIBVJjCi_rs
And apparently, that link you sent, lead to way more government sites, for example, when i searched "061O8F4" i got a sight called "solid arrow", which was similar to the one you sent, then in that code, i picked a random code "MTW7C\T8GE" and it took me to a sight very similar again called "BEGIN PRIVACY-ENHANCED MESSAGE-----"
And i notice that the icon next to the tab, are all the same, so each of them were link to the same website. The second link of codes, also actually had a date and website name, created 2001, and the name being " [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])"
(The middle being the original link Matt shared)
Where as the first (original) link was created 2013, 2nd of May. I found the name of the creator, Koury Maurice J who started the website and business with her brother, Ernest Koury, before she died in 2016. On the middle link it actually has address's, zip codes, city, states etc.

2020.10.17 10:24 Jazza23 Question about border restrictions so I can suss out this girl on hinge I am talking to atm

So this is no doubt going to be a weird post, so I apologise in advance.
Basically matched with a girl on hinge not too long ago. She already seemed a bit strange based on her profile but thought I would see where it leads to anyway.
After talking to her for a bit, she asks for my number and wants to talk to me on WhatsApp because she claims she doesn't use the dating app much, so I give it to her.
When she messages me back, her number seems to originate from Michigan based on the area code. Her hinge profile says she is originally from Michigan so it at least validates that.
When I asked her how long she has been in Perth for, she claims it's been only a week and she is visiting her brother. How is this even possible considering the border restrictions?
Also even assuming her brother meets the criteria on this site, she definitely does not meet it. https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/immediate-family-australian-citizen-or-permanent-resident
I did question her about it, but haven't gotten a response yet. Just curious what you guys think about this, just in-case I am being fucked with.
Cheers

2020.10.16 23:44 Jonsmith78 Anyone signed up for Containers for Change yet?

Edit:
Looks like you don't have to give your details to take containers back.
Not sure why you need to sign up at all - maybe to use the bag drop feature?

So, am in process of signing up to this.
Find it odd that they were asking for my Gender, Age Range, and Post code.
Haven't clicked the tick box for accepting the terms and conditions yet.
The privacy policy (see below) looks like they want a lot of info, and are gonna use this info for advertising, marketing, research or whatever the hell the want, and will share your info with whoever they want.
Not keen on accepting all this. for a measly 10 cents a container.
Am I overreacting, or does this seem like a bit of an overreach on their part?:

2020.10.16 23:32 Stoaticor Victoria records 1 new case and 0 new deaths

New cases reported in the last 24 hours

Shepparton

New Zealand

Andrews response to the 17 passengers from NZ who entered Melbourne:
Firstly, you would be aware that at around 5.30 yesterday evening, 17 people from New Zealand, having travelled on an international flight from New Zealand to Sydney, were then allowed to board a plane and travel to Melbourne. They didn't spend very long at the airport. They left the airport within only minutes, really, of having arrived. Our officers have absolutely no power to stop someone, to detain someone in those circumstances, particularly given they were coming from a very low virus part of the world. New Zealand is and we're very pleased for them, in a very different set of circumstances to the circumstances that we are in in Victoria.
We are still waiting - I am not sure why we're waiting, but we are still waiting for Australian Border Force to provide us with the passenger cards for each of those 17 people. As soon as we get that detail, we will be visiting each of those people and making sure that they are fully up to date, as it were, when it comes to the rules, the regulations, the structures that we have in Victoria. They need to be briefed on those things so they are doing the right thing. I am not sure that any of them would necessarily need to be tested. But just giving them the benefit of a clear understanding of what is required in Victoria, whether you're from Victoria or not, is very, very important.
I want to be clear on this I have written to the Prime Minister this morning and we're disappointed this has happened given that I had written to the Prime Minister on this very issue the previous day, saying at some point we will join that New Zealand/Australia travel bubble but it is not appropriate now. This is effectively possible because we haven't closed our border I don't think these people could have travelled domestically into other states where borders are closed. That is what the Prime Minister wants. We have done that and now we see 17 people turning up on our doorstep without any notice, without any structure and we still can't get the cards from Australian Border Force as to who these people are and where they have gone. Hopefully we will get that very soon.
I have written this morning to make it plain, there is more flights coming on Sunday from New Zealand and we don't want a repeat of this, where people, albeit not having a go at the 17 people, or whoever might seek to come to Victoria or Melbourne on Sunday but surely it is not beyond those who are responsible for the borders of our nation making sure that only those who are in the New Zealand bubble, can receive domestic passengers after they have arrived into an international airport. I am confident we will get to the bottom of this by the end of the day and we will be in contact with each of those people and make sure they know and fully understand the rules and what they have to do, masks and through to the reasons to leave your home and so on and so forth.

2020.10.16 01:48 GeorgeHackenschmidt Coronavirus: ‘Crony experts should be axed’, says doctor

From the Strayan:

Tens of thousands of healthcare workers have been put at risk by the failure of the nation’s top infection control advisers to toughen recommendations on the use of protective equipment and acknowledge the airborne spread of coronavirus, a senior doctors’ representative has warned.
The head of the Australian Medical Association in Western Australia, Andrew Miller, said the high rate of healthcare worker infections in Melbourne was a “national disaster” that had largely contributed to the city’s harsh lockdown and was preventing the easing of restrictions.
There have been almost 3600 healthcare workers infected in Melbourne’s second wave of COVID-19, with thousands more furloughed, forcing the closure of wards and the movement of patients off site at one hospital.
Despite the explosion in the number of infected healthcare workers, the federal chief advisers on infection control failed to upgrade their guidelines to recommend the use of respirator masks in all situations when dealing with suspected or confirmed coronavirus cases.
The current guidelines stipulate that only a surgical mask is required unless a healthcare worker is performing an aerosol-generating procedure such as taking a throat swab, or in situations where there are a high number of COVID-19 patients or the possibility that a patient will exhibit “challenging behaviour”.
Dr Miller, an anaesthetist, is now calling for the resignation of the chair of the federal Infection Control Expert Group, infectious diseases physician and microbiologist Lyn Gilbert. Dr Miller attacked the group as being made up of “largely cronies”.
“We have this patently ridiculous attitude towards healthcare worker safety from the Infection Control Expert Group, which is a group of boffins who don’t do our jobs, who were in charge before he disastrous Melbourne outbreak, and inexplicably are still in charge,” Dr Miller said.
“This committee is largely cronies, people who are very well known to each other, whose careers are interdependent, and they suffer from groupthink, lack of diversity and demonstrated failure.
“Right now the brutal fact of it is they’ve failed us. The whole committee needs to be revamped and we need to start taking PPE seriously or Melbourne won’t be the only place that ends up locked down and this won’t be the last lockdown for Melbourne.”
Professor Gilbert declined to respond. Acting Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said he had “full confidence” in Professor Gilbert and all members of the group.
“They have an unwavering commitment to evidence-based decision-making, which has evolved based on the most up-to-date evidence,” Professor Kelly said.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3599 healthcare workers — including in hospitals, aged care, GP clinics and allied health — have been infected in Victoria.
“It’s a national disaster,” Dr Miller said. “We don’t know yet how many died or ended up in ICU because they haven’t released that data. It’s caused the lockdown, there’s no doubt about it.”
The Royal Melbourne Hospital was forced to close four wards and move some patients off site in August when 139 healthcare workers were infected. St Vincent’s Hospital has had 115 COVID-19 cases in healthcare workers, and another four Melbourne hospitals including the Northern, Sunshine and Footscray, have had between 50 and 100 cases each.
Another recent cluster of cases at Box Hill hospital has accounted for a significant proportion of recent daily case numbers.
The Royal Melbourne said in a statement it had been “in line with, and in some cases above” DHHS requirements on PPE. “The safety of our staff and patients has been, and continues to be, our highest priority,” the hospital said.
St Vincent’s said its staff were “were required to wear N95 respirators when caring for patients who have tested positive or are suspected of having COVID-19”.
The Victorian health department in July strengthened its guidelines around the circumstances in which P2 or N95 respirator masks should be worn, but doctors say they are still inadequate.
The guidelines now mandate that P2 or N95 masks be worn when frequent or prolonged episodes of care are provided to COVID-19 positive patients, in “uncontrolled settings” where suspected or confirmed coronavirus patients are cohorted, and where there is a risk of unplanned aerosol generating procedures or behaviours.
Aerosol generating procedures include intubation, ventilation or sectioning of the airways.
Melbourne infectious diseases physician Michelle Ananda-Rajah described the PPE that many doctors and nurses had been given in Melbourne hospitals as “budget standard”.
“When you’re seeing healthcare outbreaks occurring amidst plummeting community transmission there should be alarm bells ringing,” she said.
“The national guidelines have chopped and changed. Policies have been reactive rather than precautionary. We have reacted to these crises rather than preventing them by giving us the highest level of PPE.”
Dr Ananda-Rajah also criticised a “command and control” culture in many hospitals in which healthcare workers have been “bullied and censored” and had their concerns at inadequate PPE dismissed.
“Overlying all the themes really was a failure of leadership,” she said. “All of these people in power, the healthcare workers feel that they have failed them.”
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the use of respirator masks for any care of suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases, as does the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
Asian countries are much stricter on the use of PPE, with healthcare workers in Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea kitted out in head-to-toe suits and tight goggles with no skin or hair exposed. There have been very few infections in healthcare workers in those countries.
Melbourne doctor Benjamin Veness, a psychiatry registrar, said fit-testing of P2 and N95 respirators had also been woefully inadequate.
“Not only have we done a poor job or providing the requisite PPE, but we haven’t done our utmost to make sure it fits and that people are trained in how to use it,” Dr Veness said.
Dr Veness called for national guidelines to be brought into line with those of the US and European CDCs, both of which acknowledge airborne spread of COVID-19 through normal physiological activity like speaking.
Dr Veness said there had been “a false assumption made that only particular types of interventions lead to the generation of aerosols and only in those circumstances were N95s provided”.
The federal Health Department, on behalf of the ICEG, said it had “consistently acknowledged the potential for transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via aerosols in specific circumstances”.
“The role of transmission via aerosols in real-life transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is unclear,” the department said.
“ICEG notes recent report of health care worker infections acquired in the workplace in the setting of prolonged, close patient contact. It remains unclear whether this reflects enhanced infection potential via predominant modes of transmission such as increased dispersal of infectious droplets and heavy environmental contamination, or aerosolisation.”
International statistics on healthcare worker infections are not available, but the level of infection in Victorian healthcare workers is relatively high by world standards. A recent paper published in The Lancet found that the prevalence of COVID-19 in the US was 2747 cases per 100,000 frontline healthcare workers compared with 242 cases per 100 000 people in the general community.
There are 119,813 doctors and nurses registered in Victoria.

2020.10.15 20:01 IBiteYou Big Tech Censorship: Proving slippery slope fallacy to be reality.

"That's a slippery slope fallacy!"
Really? Sometimes there IS actually a slip and slide coated with Crisco.
Those of us on the right have noticed tech censorship and suppression of conservative voices for a long time.
Many of you on the left have no idea what's happening simply because it never happens to you. At the end of this, I will ask you on the left a question.
Most of those of us on the right do not wish to see hateful content that advocates violence. So, we have understood when tech companies have made some of the decisions that they have made. What we want is for the policy against "hateful content" to be equally applied and to date I can't name a single platform that seems to hold all political beliefs to the same standard.
For the purposes of this post I am going to harken back to pizzagate. Most of us didn't know much about that particular controversy. It was alleged that a pizza place in DC was engaged in child sex trafficking. As a result of the conspiracy theory the business was targeted with harassment and eventually a gunman went in and fired three shots which, fortunately, did not harm anyone.
As a result of the harassment and the gunman, social media cracked down on the pizzagate conspiracy theory. It is considered one of the reasons that noted kook Alex Jones was deplatformed many places.
And many of us were like, yeah, I guess I understand not wanting to spread information that can make people potential targets of violence.
But I have to ask, where is this consideration for many articles, sites, and speakers on the left who literally refer to all Republicans as Nazis? Because this is a big issue that has led to conservatives being targeted by violent people, too.
The posts about pizzagate were "misinformation" but not anything that advocated that anyone do any violence against anyone. However, censors determined that it was dangerous misinformation BECAUSE someone MIGHT be inclined to do violence.
Which brings us to Qanon. Qanon is somewhat connected to pizzagate and alleges that there has been an underground world of highly connected people in powerful positions trafficking in underage child sex rings. There have been odd occurrences and strange events that Qanon folks tie together to form a sort of overarching theme that it's literally Satanic and these powerful people are all in on it. Because of the explosive nature of the claims and the conspiracy nature of the Qanon group, they have also found themselves deplatformed from many places.
However:

https://nymag.com/intelligence2019/08/heres-how-wed-really-know-that-trump-is-the-antichrist.html
I mean... these are ENDLESS.
Due to the labeling of "Qanon" as a de-platformable conspiracy theory, folks are now trying to say that the Durham Investigation is a "Qanon thing". It's not. The Durham Investigation has nothing to do with pedos or pedo rings or Satanism, it's an investigation into whether or not the previous administration misused intel agencies to target their political opposition.
And we've been through MONTHS of violence on our streets that has NOT been perpetrated by any Qanon people or Pizzagaters, but by angry, extremist left-wingers. If we are cracking down on speech because it COULD INCITE violence...should we not be doing it to "muh both sides"?
Because what's the difference between the pizzagate shooter and Willem van Spronsen who was so incensed by stories about "kids in concentration camps" that he firebombed an ICE facility?
He's still praised as a comrade hero in certain subreddits.
Famously, The_Donald was supposedly quarantined for advocating violence against police, but anyone who is honest knows that cops are being attacked in the streets, are under attack in the media and there are left-wing reddit subs teeming with people who advocate violence against police daily.
If you really want to reduce harm and de-escalate violence, then you have to be fair about how you apply your rules. This isn't happening. And violence IS happening.
Which brings us to Covid. Media companies somehow decided that the narrative surrounding Covid had to be controlled. In ANY situation, there are all manner of people who are going to be wrong about a thing. Social media tried to make it incumbent upon volunteer mods to make people stop saying "wrong" things about Covid. And reddit censored subreddits for covid speculation and theorizing. Saying that covid came from a lab in China was deemed WRONG and something that might get your subreddit in trouble at the beginning of this ordeal, but it now seems like it may be TRUE that Covid escaped from a lab in China.
So what's a person to do when these restrictions on speech are done?
Over the course of years, watching againsthatesubreddits has been an education in how the left targets and tries to oppress free speech. Because you RARELY see any left-wing subreddit featured there. They seem to endeavor to ignore leftists subs that incite violence against cops, capitalists, landlords...they don't bat an eye when a conservative is referred to as "subhuman" but they perk up if one of their favored groups is targeted with similar language.
No doubt there have been some horrible, shitty, racist, Nazi, anti-semitic subs on reddit.

Reddit has taken action to swiftly ban them all.

And againsthatesubreddits knows it. But now their aim has shifted and things being targeted by them are criticism of BLM or defense of Kyle Rittenhouse or even pointing out that a bunch of people arrested for rioting at a BLM rally were mostly white antifa-looking assholes.
They have moved from trying to EXPOSE actual hate, to trying to control the narrative about current events. They focused on The_Donald and now that it is gone, they seem to have shifted attention to conservative. If they succeed in getting conservative banned, they will move to republican, conservatives... any subreddit that is large and has a congregation of conservatives, they will target. This has become clear.
This is not right, not okay and it's time for reddit to let them know that while they can serve a purpose in addressing actual hate, they have now crossed the line into harassing conservative subreddits over matters that are not hateful and maligning mod teams unfairly.
Any time reddit makes an announcement post by the admins, folks flood in to the comment section to demand that conservative subreddits be shut down.
And I believe that if tech goes the way we have seen it go over the past four years and if the government does not intervene to tell tech companies that they must keep their terms of service with users and may not show bias in censorship, we will see conservative voices systematically removed from the public conversation.
We've discussed actual hate, pizzagate, Qanon, conspiracy theories and Covid...
The whole Covid censorship was a wake-up call for a lot of mods on both sides.
But now, as we approach an election, we are seeing big tech censorship hitting the Crisco'd section of the slip and slide. We just saw Webster's dictionary CHANGE the definition of "sexual preference" to say that it's offensive because Amy Coney Barrett used the term in her testimony.
Twitter and Facebook censored a negative NYPost story about Hunter Biden because "can't prove it's true and it contains personal information".
But someone overhearing someone saying that they overheard someone saying that Trump said something has been enough for esteemed publications to run a negative Trump story for many years now.
I'd say a computer hard drive with personal pics of Hunter Biden ON it trumps their "anonymous sources" any day of the week.
Admittedly reddit has been substantially better than other platforms in how it has treated this breaking news story. But there can be no doubt that other media platforms have engaged in the suppression of a legitimate news story.

For those of us who aren't idiots, the reason is clear. The story is damaging to the candidate that these tech companies want to be President.

But all's well that's Orwell, right?
This IS the slippery slope... and for those on the left:

If you think it's reasonable to suppress damaging stories about Biden, but you hit upvote on any scurrilous piece about Trump why should we think that there's ANY common ground to be found with any of you?

2020.10.15 06:00 pfeifer1982HC FujiFilm - Cynata's First Licensee Of Its Lead Product CYP-001 In GvHD

FujiFilm - Cynata's First Licensee Of Its Lead Product CYP-001 In GvHD
The terms
According to the ASX announcement dated 17 September 2017 the terms are as follows:
FujiFilm Holdings Corporation (FujiFilm) is granted an exclusive, worldwide license to develop and commercialise Cynata Therapeutics (Cynata) lead mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) product, CYP-001, for the prevention and treatment of GvHD in human so Cynata will receive US$3m cash from Fujifilm as an upfront fee. [note pfeifer1982HC: prompting a payment of US$10,000 to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) as part of the license agreement with Cynata, see below]
o Fujifilm will bear responsibility for all costs of any further product development activities in relation to GvHD, along with responsibility for regulatory submissions and commercialisation.
o The non-dilutive upfront payment of US$3m will lengthen Cynata’s cash runway and support further investment in the upcoming Phase 2 trials in critical limb ischemia (“CLI”) and in osteoarthritis, along with other potential future clinical programs.
o Cynata will potentially receive additional future milestone payments from Fujifilm totalling up to US$43m based on successful attainment of certain industry standard product development and commercial milestones, the first of which is US$2m on completion of the first Phase 2 clinical trial in USA, UK or Japan. Subsequent milestones are completion of Phase 3 clinical trials (US$3m), submission of applications for regulatory approvals (US$12m), acceptance of geographic marketing authorisations and first sales (US$16m) and extending the indication (US$10m). [note pfeifer1982HC: of which 30% will likely be payable to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) as part of the license agreement with Cynata, see below]
o Cynata will receive a 10% royalty on all future product sales if the licensed product is successfully commercialised in any country in which any licensed patents are granted or pending. o Having sub-licensed certain patent rights licensed-in from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (“WARF”) in respect of Cynata’s Cymerus™ technology to Fujifilm, Cynata will be required to make a one-off cash payment to WARF of US$10,000. Cynata is also required to pay WARF a mid-single digit percentage royalty on Fujifilm product sales and 30% of other amounts received from Fujifilm, including in respect of milestone payments.
o Both Fujifilm and Cynata have rights to terminate the license under certain conditions such as material breach and bankruptcy and failure to use reasonable efforts to achieve certain specified milestones. The agreement also includes limited mechanisms for potential royalty adjustment on termination of the WARF Head License, entry of a generic competitor or in-licensing third party enabling technology.
• Fujifilm and Cynata will enter into a separate agreement for the supply of product by Cynata for certain future product development activities at cost plus a moderate doubt digit manufacturing margin
• The endorsement by Fujifilm of Cynata’s Cymerus platform supports the continued commercialisation of Cynata’s cell therapeutic products in other indications, including CYP002 for critical limb ischemia (CLI) and CYP-004 for osteoarthritis
To facilitate Cynata’s ongoing partnering efforts certain amendments have been made to the license agreement between Cynata and WARF, particularly in relation to sub-sublicensable sub-licenses under the WARF patents and extending certain interim development milestones, whilst not changing the current milestone for obtaining approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Agency (or an equivalent foreign agency) in 2026.
[The last paragraph provided an explanation on the delay back in March, when the Licence Option was meant to be executed]

A deal that required a lot of patience from investors
In September 2016, FujiFilm and Cynata signed a Non-binding Development and Commercialisation Term Sheet. It anticipated that, under a definitive agreement, Cynata will grant FUJIFILM an option to an exclusive, worldwide licence to market and sell Cynata’s lead MSC product for prevention and treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), as well as (a) an option to negotiate a licence for manufacturing those products, and (b) certain rights to Cynata’s proprietary Cymerus™ technology for the prevention and treatment of other diseases.
FujiFilm even provided an earnings projection CYP-001 in GvHD back in their December 2016 presentation. Unfortunately, I can't get my hands on the that presentation anymore, as the FujiFilm website has been re-done since and my original link is now dead.
The much anticipated FujiFilm announcement in January 2017 caused a bit of disappointment amongst investors, as FujiFilm didn't sign a licence agreement, instead FujiFilm and Cynata signed a Development and Commercialisation Partnership Agreement aka a Licence Option Agreement to an exclusive, worldwide licence to market and sell Cynata’s lead MSC product, CYP-001, in the field of prevention and treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). As part of that, FujiFilm also took a A$3.97 million strategic equity stake in Cynata.
Over the next two years, FujiFilm wasn't shy of having its representatives talk to various newspapers. It was a bit surreal, as it sounded like they have already taken up the license, when in fact it was "only" an option to take it up.
January 2017, Junji Okada, Director, Corporate VP & GM of Corporate Planning Headquarters and Pharmaceuticals Products Divs., FujiFilm Holdings Corporation, in an interview published in "Weekly Diamond"'s January Edition with the title "FujiFilm pushing into regenerative medical business" (sorry, my links are dead but against a few that article is still available via their website):
"[...]
Get a challenge right to become a main player
We have elemental technologies cultivated with film. In the field of regenerative medicine, there are no companies in the world who have established a firm position yet. As a pharmaceutical manufacturer, we are "chase after". Even if imitating after the major and keeping up, profitability is not good and efficiency is bad. If you go out early in areas where no one is doing, you will gain the challenge of becoming a main player.
We are steadily striking the foundation necessary for regenerative medicine . Mostly it is acquisition. We are holding down all three major elements (cell, medium, scaffold) in regenerative medicine. I think that business can be deployed comprehensively just by regenerative medicine. Then you get inquiries from various places and information comes in, so you can further lead the industry.
- I am aiming for the first domestic company trial in transplant medical treatment using iPS cells in 19 years.
It is the impression that we are finally getting into the stage of business. Since I do it, I want to honor the first domestic. There is also a pride that it is a top runner in the field of regenerative medicine.
[...]
Earn "one-third" in healthcare centering on regenerative medicine
[...]
- The policy of M & A in the future.
Whether there is synergy or not is not important, but it is important. We will continue to focus on focusing areas such as image diagnosis and regenerative medicine.
- Healthcare is currently about 20% to Fujifilm HD sales. If regenerative medicine is going to grow steadily in the future, Fujifilm may be called a "medical company" day.
Other business will grow as well (laugh). I will not say how many years, but I will aim at healthcare to account for about one-third of HD sales."
To avoid altering any facts, I did not make any changes to the spelling, wording etc. What you see is exactly how it got translated using Google Translate.
In September and October 2018 FujiFilm talked to Nikkei Asia, leading to two separate articles to then be published:
Two great articles with lots of information regarding the technology, anticipated timeline/s, market opportunity, Cynata's Phase 1 trial, FujiFilm's plans in the US etc., way too much to quote on here.
Still in October 2018, an article with the title iPS-derived mesenchymal stem cells, next year at the prospect Japan-US clinical trial Fujifilm, etc. was published on nikkan.co.jp stating the following:
"The MSC used in Phase 2 trials is supplied from the United States, but in the future, it is also considering production at Japan Tissue Engineering (J-TEC) of the Fujifilm Group."
Also, in October during an FCDI presentation at The Cell & Gene Meeting on the Mesa, Nick Manuso, Senior Vice President FujiFilm Cellular Dynamics, Strategy and Business Development, had the following remarks on his presentation slides:
"Leading the field of breakthrough cellular therapies using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)
- Phase II - Graft Versus Host Disease with Cynata Therapeutics [...]"
together with a comment of Cynata's CEO Ross Macdonald at the top right corner (1:10 mins). To watch the presentation on YouTube, click here.
Ken-ichiro Hata, Deputy Director BioScience & Technology Development Center, Fujifilm Corporation Japan Tissue Engineering Co., Ltd. (J - TEC), Representative Director and President, for example in December 2018 said the following:
"There are many walls that must be overcome in order to make organs from iPS cells, but research and development of cell therapy using iPS cells is progressing steadily. CDI also supplies iPS cells to the Australian regenerative medical venture in the Fujifilm Group and contributes to the world's first iPS cell clinical trial in the UK. This is to inject a mesenchymal stem cell (* 3) made from iPS cells and treat it for patients with complications that occur after leukemia bone marrow transplantation. And Fujifilm will do the same clinical trial in Japan, as a company in 2019 for the first time. If approval from the country is obtained, I would like to sell it to medical institutions as a formulation."
Also in December 2018, FujiFilm was quoted saying:
Fujifilm announced on Wednesday that it will establish a facility for production of artificial pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) for treatment in Wisconsin State, USA. Investment amount is about 2.5 billion yen. It is intended to accelerate the development of regenerative medicine products using iPS cells and to operate it in FY 2019.
Fujifilm plans to apply for a clinical trial (clinical trial) for obtaining approval of transplantation medicine by iPS cells from the country in Japan during FY 2018. We plan to conduct clinical trials in the United States.
A US subsidiary is set up as a production facility, and introduction of cultivation equipment and so on corresponding to the quality control standards of US authorities. Rapidly develop regenerative medical products in the fields of Parkinson's disease, heart disease, cancer by iPS cells produced. We also assume production contracts from other companies.
In January 2019 FujiFilm mentioned Cynata and its Phase 1 clinical trial in GvHD a total on a total of five pages across their presentation with the title Pharmaceuticals, Bio CDMO and Regenerative Medicine Business:

Cynata's unofficial anthem among investors at the time was Beyonce's "If you like it then you should have put a ring on it"...
After the initial "deadline" for the Licence Option Agreement to run out in March 2019 and Doomsday Preppers start hording food and toilet paper preparing for the End of the World as we know it, Cynata extended the Option Agreement (see ASX announcement here and here) to then finally execute it on 17 September 2019 with the terms outlined above (praise the Lord...).

Background on CDI
FujiFilm has entered this space with a BANG the year before (30 March 2015), by announcing to acquire Cellular Dynamics International, Inc.'s (CDI) - a leading developer and manufacturer of fully functioning human cells in industrial quantities to precise specifications - issued and outstanding shares of common stock for US$16.5 per share or approximately US$307 million (on a fully diluted basis). The offer represented a premium of 108% to CDI's closing price on 27 March 2015.
The Story Behind Cellular Dynamics’ Sale to Fujifilm is one of a leader in a newly establised space (more info here), founded in 2004 by University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and stem cell pioneer James Thomson. that has built a steady business manufacturing living human cells in massive quantities. The technology is based on induced pluripotent stem cells: taking tissue from donors, CDI’s scientists coax the cells back to an embryonic-like state, then direct them to turn into desired cell types such as neurons and heart, liver, and retinal cells. The technology has applications in drug toxicity testing, cell banking, and the development of experimental cell-based therapies that could in theory heal or regrow body parts.
Despite showing increasing revenue, CDI was still in the red. With the pressure of having to repay a credit facility mounting and having all other options already explored, it was FujiFilm's opportunity to step in and up with what was deemed a more or less satisfactory offer given the current circumstances.
The acquisition was finalised in May 2015.

The perfect partner
Fujifilm, founded in 1934, has transformed itself into a company covering prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. As a comprehensive healthcare company, Fujifilm therefore saw the revolutionary treatments that regenerative medicine could offer as a key part of its mission.
An important factor in Fujifilm’s decision to enter this field was the company’s extensive portfolio of technologies, many of which seemed applicable to regenerative medicine. One example is photographic film, which was Fujifilm’s core product at the time of its foundation and for many years thereafter. Film is a precision chemical product that integrates color-producing reagents and nearly 100 different chemical compounds in total in an ultra-thin layer just 20 micrometers thick. To produce photographic film requires technologies that control many different chemical reactions on a microscopic scale. By coincidence, 20 micrometers is about the diameter of a single liver cell. Fujifilm’s technologies for controlling microenvironments appeared to have extraordinary potential in the world of regenerative medicine.
Fujifilm also possessed a wealth of knowledge about collagen, a protein that is one of the main components of photographic film. In regenerative medicine, collagen plays a critical role in growing cells and restoring tissues. To fulfill demand for the highest quality photographic film possible, Fujifilm had refined a wide range of collagen-based technologies, including methods for processing and controlling the protein, which is extremely sensitive to such environmental parameters such as moisture and temperature. Fujifilm saw a clear opportunity to leverage its collagen technologies in this exciting new field.
After its acquisition of Cynata's sister company CDI back in 2015, FujiFilm is leveraging world-leading iPSC development and production technologies to create an iPSC bank that comprises iPSCs for use in researching various diseases and conditions, which put them in a unique position to evaluate Cynata's Cymerus™ manufacturing platform as it utilises the very same iPSCs manufactured by their (now) subsidiary CDI through a licensing agreement with Cynata back in September 2014.
Having access to information that is not in the public domain, hence also not available to other companies in this space. Aiming to be recognized worldwide as a leader in regenerative medicine, Fujifilm will continue to move forward with this extremely important challenge and given that they are considering iPSCs to be the key to regenerative medicine, it came as no surprise that FujiFilm was the first one to make a move to become our licensee (CYP-001 in GvHD) in addition to also being the supplier of the iPSC starting material for Cynata's Cymerus™ MSC manufacturing platform. MSCs are among the most frequently used cell type for regenerative medicine with currently over 1,000 clinical trials initiated around the world for a wide range of diseases.
Just like Cynata's approach of developing a therapeutic platform in reverse (see here), FujiFilm positioned itself over the years as a "self-contained" leader in the regenerative medicine sector in general and a pioneer in the iPSC sector in particular by building on their existing photo technology, expanding and continuously transforming it by acquiring factories and know-how needed for any expected future needs, incorporate them in your existing business structure to then leverage on their expertise.
FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation has 317 consolidated subsidiaries as of March 31, 2020.
I'm not going to list all 317 consolidated subsidiaries now, don't worry. But lets just have a look at a few of them:
Japan:
The Americas:
Europe:
Asia & Others:
Feel free to check them out yourself to see that they are all amongst the leaders (if not THE leader) in their space.
That is vertical integration par excellence if you ask me!
Many investors, especially the ones NOT invested in Cynata might say the terms are not that exciting, being able to call a well-connected conglomerate such as FujiFilm with a Market Capital of US$20 billion your partner, has many perks including but not limited to having access to this vertically integrated, in-house regenerative medicine behemoth which also includes a advertising/marketing and distribution machinery "on steroids", that are worth multiples of the actual figures of the Licence Agreement currently in place. Remember, FujiFilm had a vital advantage over other companies in this space due to its unique position as mentioned above.
Although it might take a while for such a heavyweight to move, according to Newton's First Law of Motion, once it moves, it is also more difficult for it to stop.
I'm looking forward to what the future holds!

Aboriginal Archives: Gippsland Massacres and the unnamed dead
This is the third in a collection of true crime events, by themselves uniquely brutal and investigations themselves unquestionable, yet quietly set aside by the local public servants - be they police, justice workers, and others.
Note: This story contains the names and descriptions of deceased Aboriginal persons.
This series of crimes is not unique, but I think provides an illustrative example. Additionally, this is relating to a series of historical criminal events. The details are intentionally scarce as the perpetrators were worried about convictions so did not keep many records. The accounts of events from the local population were limited to those of the settlers.

The rolling green hills of Gippsland, Victoria [N1]
The Gunai/Kurnai people
The Gunai/Kurnai, formerly called the Gunai or Kurnai, is an Aboriginal Australian nation of south-east Australia. This post will refer to them as the Gunai Kurnai people. Their territory occupies most of present-day Gippsland and much of the southern slopes of the Victorian Alps. This land runs along the coast of southern Victoria, home to stunning old growth forests in East Gippsland and noted for its modern agriculture. Gippsland was a true Garden of Eden for European settlers. However, the Gunai Kurnai people were well established there. With about 4000 persons before European settlement Gippsland was more densely populated than many other areas.
Context
In the mid-1990s, there was a so-called culture war (the "history wars") within the halls of Australian historic academia [N2]. This was a fierce debate driven by a bone of contention - it was a long-held, deeply believed myth that Australia was a county where explanation into Abogional lands was a largely peaceful one. During that time even calculating the number of Aboriginal dead was seen as a controversial attempt at changing history and assigning blame needlessly. When Australian history began to develop as its own area of interest in the 1950s there was little to no attention paid to Aboriginal Australian history; at best it was a backdrop to the European experience and at worst of a fluke of perpetuation by unusually clever beasts. Now there is a map available showing the locations of the Colonial Frontier Massacres from 1780 to 1930 [N3].
Note that on Tasmania the native Palawa is fully extinct, as is their language and culture: in 1803 there was an estimated 3,000 to 15,000 people but within thirty years there was just 47. The final death keel came where the last 400 persons were incarcerated in camps where most died from a toxic mixture of malnutrition and disease. Some current descendants of Palawa women and European men refer to themselves as Aboriginal Tasmanians.
A picture of the last four Palawa c. 1860s. Truganini, the last to survive, is seated at far right. [N4]
The Accused

One of six historical bronze figures, McMillan is represented by a coat of arms, Scottish thistle, and two human skulls in a saddlebag. By Annemieke Mien, 1986. [N5]
Angus McMillan, such a famed explorer that his cairn lists the sites he discovered, is also a notable mass murderer. He led many of the Gippsland massacres a ten year period starting in 1940 that killed or displaced the Gunai Kurnai. Born on the Isle of Skye, Scotland McMillan migrated to Australia in 1838; by the time of the Warrigal Creek Massacre he was entrenched in pastoral activities, leading many of the assaults on the Gunai Kurnai. Presently, nineteen monuments honouring McMillian exist in Gippsland, his homestead was preserved then moved to its current location at the open-air museum Old Gippstown. The federal seat was named after him in 1948. The Federal Division of McMillan was renamed Division of Monash in 2018.
Captain William Dana was born in England into a family of notable military experience. He established the Native Police Corps in what would become Victoria. He was also responsible for the Barmah Lake and Snowy River massacres. The Corps is considered reasonable for 125 deaths over two decades. Dana was notable for refusing to arrest Aboriginal people, preferring to have them shot.
The reports on Barmah Lake do not list any official deaths. Instead, an unofficial verbal report made to GA Robinson by a man only referred to as Allen made the following statement:
...a number of men also women were shot by Dana's party at the Murry [sic] and children were knocked on the head with carrabines [sic]. They first sent out a party to look for the natives and then went and planted themselves in a scrub and sent two or three troopers to round or drive them like sheep to be large party carrelled; then they commenced firing and shot some of them in the river. Dana told me he had a brush with the natives. He went to the Murry [sic] by the Campaspe and returned said 20 men, one woman, five children were shot. Kelsh's overseer told me that he, Dana, said he would turn the natives out. (Robinson 5 Jan 1844). [N6]
The Deaths

October–December 1840: Nuntin Station
In October 1840, squatter Angus McMillan brought down cattle from Numblamungie to the stock run at Nuntin in Gippsland. He left his men in charge there and on his return some weeks later they told him that the Kurnai had scattered the stock and attacked them. McMillan gathered his stockmen together, and massacred any Kurnai [possibly Gunnai or Tatungalung or Braiakaulung speakers] at Boney Point on the confluence of the Avon and Perry Rivers. McMillan admitted to this incident in a letter to Lieutenant Governor La Trobe on August 25, 1853. When G.A. Robinson travelled through this area in 1844, he saw many human bones and skulls along the shores of Lake Wellington. Historian P. D. Gardner considers that at least 15-20 Aborigines were killed. Total: 20

In July 1843, Ronald Macalister, nephew of squatter Lachlan Macalister, was murdered by Brataualang Aborigines, near Port Albert. An avenging party of 20 horsemen, known as 'The Highland Brigade' was organised by Angus McMillan, Lachlan Macalister's former overseer, to look for the killer. The 'brigade' was 'sworn to secrecy'. They went on a five days rampage, killing over 150.

IN-DEPTH:
Box’s Creek Massacre
In 1841 some thirty Kurnai were murdered by European settlers at Box’s Creek (also known as Butcher’s Creek). They were pursued in retaliation for allegedly spearing cattle and trapped on a peninsula of land at Bancroft Bay by an armed party of twelve. On that strip of land, hemmed by endless water, they were slaughtered.
Warrigal Creek Massacre
In July 1843, Ronald Macalister, nephew of squatter Lachlan Macalister, was murdered by Brataualang Aborigines, near Port Albert. According to G.A. Robinson he was murdered after some depraved white men, had, in a fit of drunkenness, 'shot and killed some friendly natives.' An avenging party of 20 horsemen, known as 'The Highland Brigade' was organised by Angus McMillan, Ronald Macalister's former overseer, to look for the killer. The 'brigade' was 'sworn to secrecy' and they appear to have set out on a five day rampage attacking 4 Aboriginal campsites.
After slaughtering about 75 at Warrigal Creek Waterhole and a further 25 at Warrigal Creek mouth, they then shot down another family group of 25 at Freshwater Creek, before moving on to Gammon Creek. In reviewing every known account of the massacre in 2001, Peter Gardiner considers that Gammon Creek was the last in the rampage and that 25 Kurnai were slaughtered and human bones later found. In all 150 Kurnai were killed in the 5-day rampage across 4 sites. The rampage would fit the criteria of 'genocidal massacre'. In reviewing every known account of the rampage in 2001, Peter Gardner considers Warrigal Creek mouth was the second campsite where 25 Aboriginal people were killed.
Afterwards, McMillan kept a hessian bag of human skulls for some time after the event.
Human bones have been found at the site on several occasions. Total: 150
The White Woman of Gippsland
A rumour around the area led to the repeated abuse of Gunai Kurnai by local pastoral settlers. They thought that a white woman had been kidnapped and was being held and raped by locals of Gippsland. Repeated raids were held based on the discovery of woman's undergarments and the assumption that survivors of a shipwreck in 1836 made it to shore. The white men...
"They also carried a number of handkerchiefs, with the following notice printed in English and Gaelic:
"WHITE WOMAN."
There are 14 armed men in search of you. Be cautious and rush to them when you see them near you. Be particularly on the look-out every dawn of morning. For then the party are in hopes of rescuing you. The white settlement is towards the setting sun.
Possibly this is the only instance of Gaelic having been used officially in Victoria, the reason being the supposed loss of a ship in Bass Straits with a number ol' Highland immigrants, many of whom at that period were unacquainted with English.
The expedition succeeded in taking prisoner the woman's supposed captor, Bunjaleena. But, although he was imprisoned and not released until he undertook to deliver her up, that wily individual only appears to have led the police a succession of wild goose chases. One interesting find they made, however, was the figurehead of a small vessel. It was the bust of a woman. The blacks carried it aboutwith them, and appeared to hold it in great reverence, for it was only obtained from them with the greatest difficulty.
The late Mr. Allan McLean always expressed himself as having been very doubtful of a white woman ever having been with the Gippsland blacks, asserting that the figurehead secured by the third expedition was the fonset orgio of the various reports. How he held this view it is hard to conceive, for on October 29, 1847, only four miles away from Tyers' Camp, a native trooper found the dead body ofa white woman and a half-caste child. The following day Angus McMillan held an inquiry, but nothing was found by which the unfortunate's identity could be established." [N8]
It's been suggested that the figurehead is the most likely theory as to the rumours of the White Woman of Gippsland and the repeated raids were driven by hysteria. Total: 50
[N9]
In 1846 Gippsland squatter Henry Meyrick wrote in a letter home to his relatives in England:
The blacks are very quiet here now, poor wretches. No wild beast of the forest was ever hunted down with such unsparing perseverance as they are. Men, women and children are shot whenever they can be met with … I have protested against it at every station I have been in Gippsland, in the strongest language, but these things are kept very secret as the penalty would certainly be hanging … For myself, if I caught a black actually killing my sheep, I would shoot him with as little remorse as I would a wild dog, but no consideration on earth would induce me to ride into a camp and fire on them indiscriminately, as is the custom whenever the smoke is seen. They [the Aborigines] will very shortly be extinct. It is impossible to say how many have been shot, but I am convinced that not less than 500 have been murdered altogether. [N10]

2020.10.14 02:17 pfeifer1982HC The SCUlpTOR Trial - A Phase 3 Clinical Trial In Knee Osteoarthritis

"Stem Cells as a symptom- and strUcture-modifying Treatment for knee OsteoaRthritis - the SCUlpTOR trial" is a collaboration with the University of Sydney and is funded by an Australian Government NHMRC Project Grant, as well as in-kind contributions from participating institutions.
The cells, Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) to be exact, will be supplied by an Australian company called Cynata Therapeutics.
Under the terms of the agreement, Cynata retains all the commercial rights to use the Cymerus MSCs in osteoarthritis, and would pay up to A$2.1m ($1.42m) as fees to the University of Sydney if the results of Phase II [now Phase 3] trial are used for regulatory marketing approval of Cymerus MSCs for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
The trial, which is listed on the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry (ANZCTR), is set evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of stem cell injections in 440 patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis at study centres in NSW and TAS this year, and lead by Professor David Hunter.
Professor Hunter is a rheumatology clinician researcher whose main research focus has been clinical and translational research in osteoarthritis (OA). He is the Florance and Cope Chair of Rheumatology and Professor of Medicine at University of Sydney and the Royal North Shore Hospital. He is ranked as the worlds leading expert in osteoarthritis on Expertscape.com since 2014. He is on the editorial board for Arthritis and Rheumatology, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, Arthritis Care and Research and part of the review committee for OA for the American College of Rheumatology, EULAR and OARSI scientific meetings. Dr Hunter has over 450 peer reviewed publications in international journals, numerous book chapters, is the section editor for UpToDate Osteoarthritis and has co-authored a number of books, including books on self management strategies for the lay public.
Lets just say he is qualified to lead such a trial...
Over a period of 24 months, patients will receive three knee intra-articular injections of Cymerus™ iPSC-MSCs (baseline, week 3 and 52) at a dose of 2.5 x 10^7 MSCs, suspended in 5 ml excipient solution, with regular follow-up visits during that period.
Given the extent of this trial with Two Primary and 31 different Secondary Outcomes to be evaluated at up to eight times per outcome, it is no surprise that after what was initially to be approved to be a Phase 2 clinical trial, received a Phase 3 "upgrade" reflected in the final HREC-approved version of the protocol, on an expedited pathway under the CTN scheme as advised by the TGA.
Having only conducted a Phase 1 clinical trial in SR-aGvHD so far, although achieving very positive results with an Overall Survival after 2 years of 60% with no treatment-related serious adverse events or safety concerns, an upgrade from Phase 2 to Phase 3 in a different indication without even having conducted a preclinical study, is a vote of confidence in Professor Hunter as well as Cynata's Cymerus™ iPSC-MSC platform approach in my opinion.
That gives tiny Australian company Cynata with a Market Capital of currently A$112 million, an opportunity to participate in an approach to cut the government's A$23 billion a year bill for the direct and indirect costs of osteoarthritis.
I have contacted the Ministry of Health a few weeks ago to see if non-life threatening clinical trials are due to resume any time soon after an earlier shift of prioritisation and resource allocation in response to COVID-19, and was a advised that sites in NSW have mostly resumed their full trial portfolios. It is therefore now up to the University of Sydney and their Human Research Ethics Committee to decide.
Given the recent position vacancy for a Research Assistant at the University of Tasmania, for which one the tasks is to "Identify, contact and recruit study participants", with a deadline of 12th August 2020 (advertised: 29th July 2020), we might see this trial commence soon.

Information regarding Cynata's Cymerus™ manufacturing platform can be found here.

2020.10.13 22:46 cincbus Introducing: The Spanish Royal Family

Royal Family Twitter: u/CasaReal
King Alfonso III (1886-1941)
Gonna go back one more generation than usual to start this wild ride.
Alfonso the III's father, Alfonso XII, died while his mother was pregnant with him, thus he was King upon his birth in 1886. She served as regent until his 16th birthday when he assumed full authority as King. After a series of poor choices, he aligned his fortunes to the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, who fell from power in 1930. Municipal elections in 1931 resulted in a landslide victory for the Republican and Socialist parties, and they demanded the King abdicate the throne. The King went into exile but refused to abdicate.
While exiled, his eldest son, Alfonso, renounced his right to the throne to marry a commoner.
His second son, Jaime, renounced his rights to the throne because he was deaf.
This left his third son, Juan, as heir apparent. In 1947, General Francisco Franco declared Spain a monarchy yet again, calling it a “restoration”. However, he did not trust Juan as heir. As a result, in 1969, his son, Juan Carlos, was selected as King.
King Juan Carlos I (b. 1938) (abdicated)
Juan Carlos is the grandson of Alfonso XIII, the last king of Spain before the monarchy was abolished in 1931. He was born in exile in Rome, however was allowed back to Spain in 1948 to be further educated there. He joined the army, completing his officer training from 1955-1957. Afterwards, he spent time in both the naval school and the air force school, and later studied law, international political economy and public finance at the University of Madrid.
He was selected to be King of Spain over his father, Juan, by General Franco.
So, why did Franco bring back the monarchy? I found this answer online:
“We’re accustomed to believing a tyrant like Franco could do anything he wanted. Yet, in reality, his options were very limited, amounting to:
a) Do nothing OR appoint another military strongman to take his place.
b) Restore the republic.
c) Restore the monarchy.
There really are no further choices. Regarding (a), Franco was well aware that dictatorships are little more than the cult surrounding the person of the dictator, who is unable to transfer the cult to any 3rd party. So, a dead dictator equates to a dead dictatorhip, perhaps not immediately but before very long the ‘Franco Regime Without Franco’ was bound to implode. Franco accepted this to be an awkward truth, but he swallowed the bitter pill nonetheless.
Option (b) was never in the cards — Franco detested the Republic he fought to unseat and never even considered bring one back to govern Spain post-mortem.
That only leaves option (c). For Franco, the issue was not Monarchy Vs. Republic but rather (i) what sort of monarchy, and (ii.) incarnated by whom? The choices might seem straight-forward, but reality was rather complex since the legitimate heir to the throne (Juan de Bourbon, Count of Barcelona) was a man with whom Franco agreed on practically nothing. The Count of Barcelona made his political philosophies publicly know in the so-called Laussane Manifesto (Mar, 1945), the contents of which were diametrically opposed to the Franco Regime on practically all matters of importance.
Hence, in ’47 Franco did the only thing he regarded as workable — restoring the monarchy in theory but leaving the throne vacant, pending an eventual nomination to fill the seat. The temporary vacancy last 22 years when the Count’s son (Juan Carlos I) was officially designated as heir to the dual roles of head-of-state & commander-in-chief of the armed forces.”
Furthermore, Franco disliked Juan (father of Juan Carlos), whom he suspected of being an Anglophile (Franco despised the British and referred to Great Britain as “perfidious Albion”); he was also determined to be the sole arbiter of Spain’s destiny. And so he was. For the next thirty-six years, Franco remained the country’s unchallenged caudillo, or strongman, and although he declared Spain a monarchy once again, in 1947, he kept the throne empty, leaving Don Juan to languish and fret in neighboring Portugal, even as Franco himself assumed the role of dispenser of noble titles.
In a cruelly Shakespearean twist, Franco asked Don Juan to send him his son, Juan Carlos, who was then ten, to be educated and groomed under Franco’s supervision. In 1969, when Juan Carlos was thirty-one, Franco summoned him and informed the young man of his decision to make him his successor, with the title of King of Spain . (Excerpt from this article)
Juan Carlos met and consulted with Franco many times, standing next to him at ceremonies, publicly supporting his regime, and praising his government. Franco gave full control to Juan Carlos 3 weeks before his death in 1975. Juan Carlo’s position was further legitimized on 1977 when his father formally renounced his claim to the throne.
On paper, Juan Carlos retained fairly extensive reserve powers. He was the guardian of the Constitution and was responsible for ensuring that it was obeyed. In practice, since the passage of the Constitution (and especially since 1982), he took a mostly non-partisan and representative role, acting almost entirely on the advice of the government.
Juan Carlos enjoyed extreme popularity in Spain for many years until multiple scandals (detailed below) were made public about him and his family. As a result, he abdicated the throne on behalf of his son.
Coup D'Etat
Ever since the dictator Francisco Franco had died in 1975, Spain had been changing at the speed of light. Democratic reform was the watchword of the decade, and each reform came one after the other. King Juan Carlos had handed power to parliament and instituted a new constitution. It was all way too fast for Spain's conservatives. According to history.com, it came to a head on February 23, 1981. Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero led 200 members of the civil guard in invading the Cortes, Spain's legislature building. They fired shots in the air and took the parliament hostage.
Spaniards were glued to their television sets for 18 hours as the band of civil guards held the Cortes. King Juan Carlos appealed to the Spanish army to condemn these renegades and affirm their loyalty to the new constitution. The army did and the bandits had to retreat in shame, thus preserving Spain's democracy.
Shooting of Little Brother
In 1956, at age 18, he shot his younger brother Alfonso in the head while the two were playing with a revolver. He has maintained throughout his life that it was an accident, however Alfonso passed away as a result of his injuries.
The financial scandal
Juan Carlos’s daughter, Princess Cristina, is married to Inaki Urdangarin. Urdangarin and his ex-business associate, Diego Torres, were the leading figures in the Nóos Institute, a non-profit that secured no-bid contracts from the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearic Islands using Urdangarin’s influence.Urdangarin and Torres also used their non-profit to divert around €6.2 million from public contracts secured for organizing sports events into private accounts. Urdangarin’s wife, Cristina de Borbón, sat on the board of a company, Aizoon, that was allegedly used to channel part of these funds. She was made to testify in the case, and was ultimately fined for having benefited from her husband’s scheme, but was acquitted of tax fraud complicity.
In June 2018 he was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison; he is currently imprisoned in Ávila.
The hunting trip
In 2012 the King injured himself on an elephant hunting trip in Botswana. At a time when Spainairds were suffering from a lagging economy, this trip was viewed as obscene in terms of expenses and extravagance. Spain’s unemployment was at 23%, and nearly 50% for young workers. To make matters worse, he was the honorary president of the Spanish branch of the World Wildlife Fund.
The public was only made aware of the trip because the King was injured and had to be helicoptered from the scene. Even worse - his mistress was there with him.
Abdication
In 2014 Juan Carlos announced his plans to abdicate the throne in favor of his son, Felipe.
Post-Abdication Scandals
More recently, it emerged that Juan Carlos had accepted a previously undeclared “gift” of a hundred million dollars from Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah—allegedly a bribe in return for his help in arranging a lucrative fast-rail-construction contract.
Further roiling the public, one of Juan Carlos’s former lovers, a Danish-born events organizer named Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein—who had accompanied him on his Botswana safari—has acknowledged that Juan Carlos had given her, some years ago, sixty-five million euros (worth about eighty-four million dollars at the time). This “gift” is believed to have come out of the funds given to Juan Carlos by King Abdullah.
The latest bombshell shaking the royal house involves secret audio recordings of princess Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, a German aristocrat living in Monte Carlo who for years has been romantically linked to the 80-year-old former king and now accuses him of using her name to buy property in Morocco, of accumulating a secret fortune hidden in several Swiss bank accounts under the name of one of his cousins, Alvaro d'Orleans Bourbon, of using fake cut-outs to commit tax fraud and of taking millions in commissions on state contracts.
As a result, the current King Felipe announced he would renounce his personal inheritance from his father and that his father would no longer receive a royal allowance. Afterwards, Juan Carlos vanished.
Exile
In August of this year (2020), Juan Carlos sent a public letter to King Felipe VI, saying that he would be leaving the country due to “the public repercussions that certain past events in [his] private life are generating.” Later reports speculated that he had either gone to Portugal, where his father, Don Juan de Borbón, lived in exile for part of his life, or to the Dominican Republic, which he has visited multiple times. It’s a sign that the figurehead of Spanish democracy understands that he has endangered his legacy—and the monarchy itself.
It has not been published where Juan Carlos is currently living, however photos have been obtained that appear to show Juan Carlos disembarking a plane in Abu Dhabi.

Marriage:
Juan Carlos married Princess Sofia of Greece and Denmark, daughter of the King of Greece in 1962. In an effort for young, suitable European royals to meet and mingle (and also to boost tourism in Greece), Sophia’s mother arranged a Mediterranean cruise on the Greek yacht Agamemnon in 1954. Several teenaged and twenty-something royals were invited on the trip touring a handful of Greek islands. Juan Carlos and Sofia were among the young royals on the cruise.
They met up at additional weddings and events over the next several years, and were officially reunited in Rome at the 1960 Olympic Games. The Greek royal family held a dinner for the Spanish guests onboard their ship, Polemistis. Following the Olympics, Juan Carlos and his family were invited to spend Christmas 1960 in Greece.
In 1961, Sofia traveled to the UK to attend the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. Juan Carlos was picked to serve as her escort. Following the wedding, Juan Carlos spent the summer of 1961 in Greece and the two announced their engagement in 1961.
Due to Juan Carlos’ uneasy position in Spain, an Athens wedding was planned for May, the beginning of the tourist season in Greece. The celebrations involved 4 ½ months of nearly round-the-clock preparation headed by Colonel Dimitri Levidis, Grand Marshal of the Greek royal court.
Their marriage has never been a happy one and Juan Carlos is known to have had multiple affairs. Though the King is in exile, they remain married, however it is known that they have lived largely separate lives for many years.

Queen Sofia (b. 1938)
Sofia is the eldest child of King Paul of Greece, and is the daughter, sister, wife, and mother of a King. She was educated at a boarding school in Germany, then studied childcare, music, and archeology in Athens. She was a reserve member of Greece’s gold medal winning sailing team at the 1960 Olympic games.
Sofia is now immensely popular in Spain. She is known to quietly endure the monarchy’s trials, putting her own professional obligations ahead of anything else. This was not, however, always the case. Throughout her reign she has been regarded with skepticism because of her foreign background and mediocre Spanish skills.
In 2008, Queen Sofía shared some of her political ideology during an interview with journalist Pilar Urbano. One of them was her belief that same-sex marriage should not be called marriage. "If those persons want to live together, dress up as bride and groom and get married, they can do so, but that should not be called marriage because it is not," the queen is quoted as saying in Urbano's book.
Her controversial comments about same-sex marriage particularly elicited outrage among liberal groups, and the Royal Palace quickly shared an apology but qualified it by implying she had been misquoted.
Though her husband is in exile, Sofia has remained in Spain and continues to undertake official duties on behalf of her son, the King. She is a vital weapon in Felipe VI’s battle to shore up the popularity of a monarchy hit by scandal and now, suggestions from some politicians that it might have seen better days. Consistently one of the most admired members of the Spanish Royal Family, the enduring affection and respect that Queen Sofía inspires will be needed by her son as he faces a turbulent future for the monarchy.
She speaks Greek, English, German and Spanish.
See her giving a speech in English
King Felipe VI (b. 1968)
Ascended the throne in 2014 upon the abdication of his father. He is head of state and commander-in-chief of the Spanish Armed Forces. He attended high school in Canada and studied at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He completed his academic studies by obtaining a Master of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown, where he was the roommate of his cousin Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece.
From 1985-1993 he spent time completing his military training.
Felipe speaks Spanish, Catalan, French, English, and Greek.
He was a member of the Spanish Olympic sailing team at the Barcelona games in 1992 and was the Spanish team’s flag bearer.
Marriage:
The exact details around how Felipe and Letizia met are unknown, however it is reported that they met at a dinner party in 2003. They dated in secret for more than a year before surprising the public with their engagement in 2003.The two were married in 2004 in Madrid.
Her Gown
More on the wedding, more here
Watch their wedding (it POURED rain)
See Felipe meet Barack Obama (in English)
Author's Note: Google photos of Felipe. You won't be sorry.
Queen Letizia (b. 1972)
Letizia was born in Spain, the daughter of a journalist and registered nurse. She completed a bachelor’s degree in journalism as well as a master’s degree in audiovisual journalism. She worked as the evening anchor of the TVE evening news, the most viewed newscast in Spain. She reported from Washington DC in 2000 on the presidential elections, 2001 from Ground Zero, and 2003 from Iraq.
She was actually married once before Felipe to a writer and high school teacher after dating for almost 10 years. Their marriage lasted one year.
Letizia is far from Spain’s most popular member of the royal family. There was a public spat with her mother-in-law, and it made news when she scolded her fiance for interrupting her during their engagement interview.
She is known for her fashion and beauty. In 2008 she underwent surgery on her nose to “correct a respiratory problem”, however afterwards her nose was notably different.
Author's Note: I feel like I gave a negative impression of Letizia here, but to be honest it's a bit hard to find information about heher personality. I would love someone who is more familiar to fill us all in.
Watch her speak in English here
Felipe and Letizia have two daughters:
Crown Princess Leonor, Princess of Asturias (b. 2005)
Leonor is heir presumptive to the throne of Spain. She does not go by Crown Princess, but rather by Princess of Asturias, the title given to the heirs in Spain (like Prince of Wales in the UK). The Spanish monarchy operates under a system of male-preference cognatic primogeniture, meaning if Felipe were to have a male heir he would replace Leonor in the line of succession. Felipe and Letizia appear to be done having children, however.
In 2018, she was invested by her father with the Order of the Golden Fleece, the most senior order in Spain and the highest award the King can bestow. She is one of only 4 females to be inducted into it.
The other 3 women are Queen Elizabeth, Princess Beatrix, and Queen Margrethe of Denmark (no big deal!!!)
See the proud fathedaughter moment here.
In 2019, at age 14, she gave a speech in both English and Spanish at the Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony. (such poise!!)

Infanta Sofia (b. 2007)
Sofia is the second daughter of the King and Queen. She is a student in Madrid.
See photos of the family from Spain’s National Day on 10/12. https://twitter.com/CasaReal/status/1315601785382416384?s=20
Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo (b. 1963)
Elena is the eldest child of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia, however because Spain operates under male-preference cognatic primogeniture, her younger brother Felipe is King of Spain.
She married Jamie de Marichalar y Saenz de Tejada in Seville and has two children:
Elena and Jamie divorced in 2009. She undertakes engagements on behalf of her brother, the King.
Infanta Cristina, (stripped of title Duchess of Palma de Mallorca) (b. 1965)
Cristina was born in Madrid, the younger daughter of the King and Queen. She is a sailor and competed in the 1988 summer Olympics. She completed a degree in political science from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, then an MA in international relations from New York University in 1990. She then worked at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
She speaks Spanish, Catalan, English, French, and Greek.
Cristina married handball player Inaki Urdangarin in Barcelona in 1997. They have four children:
I talked about this above, but she and her husband were investigated and tried for fraud for their ties to a corruption scandal involving a company they owned. Cristina was acquitted, however her husband is currently serving a prison sentence.
Because of the scandal, her brother officially stripped her of her title in 2015. Her right of succession and the royal title of Infanta were unaffected.

Vacation
Random note but the Spanish royals vacation in Palma de Mallorca for the summer each year and always produce some of my favorite family photos.
See some here, here, here, or just google them.
A Monarchy in Trouble
Though Felipe and his mother, Queen Sofia, are well-liked, support for the monarchy in Spain has always been thin at best. Coupled with all of the scandals discussed above, Felipe is tasked with saving a monarchy that at times is extremely unpopular with the public. He has had to publicly distance himself from his father, his sister, and other family friends involved in these scandals. This has eroded the appearance of family unity in the monarchy.
From an article:
Despite his attractive family and relative youth, Felipe has struggled to maintain the level of popularity he had heading into his current position. As head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces as well as king, he looks all-powerful on paper, but like many other royals his role is more figurehead than policy-maker. Spain's monarch is looked to for guidance and leadership, though, and he can certainly still be blamed when things go wrong.
Felipe, who in 2015 cut his own salary by almost 20 percent as the country continued to pull itself out of its recession, received a four-minute ovation after delivering his annual address marking the opening of Spain's new legislative session in February, in which he said that the opposing parties that have formed the current coalition government must come together, that "the time has come for words, for arguments and for reasoning, from a position of mutual respect."
To add to his troubles, Catalonia has been trying to split from Spain and gain independence for quite sometime, and Catalonian’s do not want a monarchy. In fact, they recently passed a non-binding motion condemning the monarchy in the wake of Juan Carlos’s departure from Spain. The proposal “Catalonia is a republic and does not want a king” was passed by 69 votes in favor and 65 against. In a recent article out of Catalonia, less than 15% of Catalans prefer having a king to a republic.
As a result, Felipe and Letizia have been pulling out all of the stops to present a united family front and a strong monarchy to the public - they have been undertaking public engagements more often, invited the press into their home, and we’re seeing more and more of their two daughters in an attempt to improve their favorability in Spain.

2020.10.12 21:32 glimmeronfire Strange email from “FidelityLife” that ends in a while dump of random gibberish

I’m sorry this is so long but I copied and pasted everything in the email onto here. I got an email from FidelityLife but the address is actually “[email protected] boyhip. net” and was sent to me at “[myemail]@outlook.com” but I use gmail so I’m not sure how this even got to me. If anybody has some insight as to what happened, why all that gibberish is there, what it might mean, or how it got to me, I’d really appreciate it. Again, sorry for the long post. Thank you. Edited to add: A lot of the random stuff below was in different font sizes, underlines, strikethroughs, links, and languages. Obviously the formatting didn’t stay the same when I copied it. It’s so strange.

2020.10.12 13:17 oscian Finding Evangelion 1.11 and 3.33 DVDs in Sydney Australia

I've been scouring gumtree and eBay for the DVDs for rebirth, only recently watching Eva and EoE for the first time recently and becoming interested in the DVD series, which is meant to get a fourth movie soon.
I've only found one copy of 2.22 on DVD and 1.01 on DVD on gumtree, which I now have, I've heard is 1.01 worse than 1.11, so im trying to see if I can also get it too, but 1.01 is there if its not possible to find.Does anyone in Sydney know any shops that might have the DVDs for 1.11 and 3.33, or is more knowledgeable of sites other than eBay and gumtree for this kind of stuff in Australia.
There is many listings of 3.33 in Blu-ray from sellers with names like oz games shop, being set up in the UK posing as an Australian seller with a PO BOX which makes me sceptical of buying stuff new off eBay, mighty ape is the only place I think I can get it but I don't know if they're using a sketchy supplier either.
https://www.mightyape.com.au/product/evangelion-3-33-you-can-not-redo-dvd/22100070
Plus there's like a single listing of the Blu-rays Australia and they're bundled as a trilogy, they are pretty used for a price way too high to me, and one Blu-ray has the pamphlets missing, so that's why I've only been able to get DVDs so far.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Neon-Genesis-Evangelion-1-11-2-22-3-33-Blu-Ray-Australian-release/254732767554?hash=item3b4f419142:g:BjEAAOSwbC9fcoDW
Hopes are that they re-release a Blu-ray box set when the fourth movie comes out eventually, that's basically last resort, hoping Australia gets it at the same time as the rest of the world.
EDIT 16/10:
Well looks like the fourth movie just got a release date announcement, perfect timing as ive almost got all three movies.
